Seminar Theme

Advances in hardware and software for digitization of information have made electronic publishing a viable format for scholarly communication.  The rapid success of these technologies let to develop many types of electronic recourses.  Electronic Resources that are introduced in the libraries including databases, e-journals, e-books, project reports, reading lists, past exam papers, lecture materials, reading materials, Web pages, etc., available in digital form collected, processed and managed by the libraries and information centers for providing various  types of services to their users. In addition to these, different types of libraries are using many more other resources to fulfill the requirements of their users.  Rapid growth in the number of electronic resources and complexity of managing e-collections has posed new challenges for librarians and hence requires the development of new tools.  To over come this problem, Electronic Resources Management Systems were introduced both for managing e-collections throughout their life cycle and also for aiding collection-development decision making.  The integration of such systems in the existing library environments is helpful to information professionals.

Any new technology provides many new applications but also pose some new problems and challenges.  The advent to internet and Web Technologies have given rise to increased concerns regarding plagiarism and illegal copying and distribution of digital content.  Digital Rights Management (DRM) Addresses these issues and protects the rights of the content providers.  The main issue for librarians is how library services have to be changed to accommodate e-resources into the library collection.  Other problems faced by the libraries are to be discussed are licensing issues, user authentication, date encryption, payment methods, cataloging of e-resources and providing access to the users.  Also the library staff needs training in the use and management to e-resources.  In spite of trained manpower, availability of many automated systems to manage the e-resources, libraries, librarians, information produces, publishers, information vendors and users are still facing lot of problems.  To create a market for the e-resources, new business models and marketing strategies need to be adopted.  In addition to these, there are many other problems faced by the authors, e-publishers abd booksellers to be discussed in international professional forums particularly in the Indian context so that we can reach to some consensus between these groups.  This seminar tries to provide a platform for representatives from these groups to discuss and address the key issues in the publishing, usage and management of e-resources.
